Multiple risk expressed in estimated coronary heart disease mortality was calculated as the age-standardized (see above) sum of individual probabilities of dying from a coronary heart disease event within six years after the baseline investigation. Individual probabilities were calculated by means of the multiple logistic risk function published by the ERICA Research Group,2 which is based on age, cholesterol, systolic blood pressure, BMI and a dummy variable for smoking. This risk function was available only for men aged 40-59 years.

The surveys were based on simple random sampling procedures (stratified or nonstratified) or cluster sampling in accordance with the Guidelines. The participation rates were over 70% in most of the surveys. Altogether, data for 30 843 men and 28 965 women were processed. The surveys cover the age range 25-64 years for both genders, except for the survey from Byelorussia, which only reported on men 40-59 years old. The qualified MONICA survey standardization procedures were used as much as possible in the mandatory CINDI evaluation guidelines.
