A systemic perspective suggests that there is considerable scope for difficulties to arise prompted by a variety of external factors which can steer a secure parent towards an insecure attachment with a particular child. Attachment does appear to suggest a somewhat linear process whereby the parent shapes the child rather than vice versa. Salomon and George (1999) suggest that a more systemic, circular view is possible: ‘It is likely that the influence of the baby on the care-giving system is part of a feedback loop; in 42 ATTACHMENT NARRATIVE THERAPY other words, it is transactional rather than linear and unidirectional’ (1999: 659).

The evidence for this view has been on the basis of mothers’ attachment representations as predictive of the quality of the attachments with their infants. A key feature of this process is seen to be a mother’s sensitivity to her infant and it has been suggested that this will override other factors, such as temperamental differences. Salomon and George, (1999) however, argue that the evidence is less clear than had been believed and that concordance between the mother’s attachment style and the baby’s is highest for mothers who are secure but is less convincing for mothers of insecure infants, especially when mothers are unresolved about early loss.

5). 5 A circularity of actions–beliefs/feelings Though the above is clearly a simplification it does illustrate the possibility that attachment patterns may develop from such feedback loops of actions, beliefs and feelings. One way of recognizing that this is a mutually maintained pattern is if either partner attempts to change it. Nancy might at some point feel that she would like a little more affection from Daniel but since he is convinced that she is pretty tough and has learnt a belief in selfreliance he is unlikely to respond to her invitation.
