My sense of feeling stupid and of dreading the feeling of shame at being perceived as such hung over my days at college like a cloud.

I was studying in London, and remained at home with my parents whilst I studied. The idea of moving out and sharing a flat with other students did not occur to me at all. I was totally at ease at home. What on earth would I want to leave for?
